This is a required course text which is focused on Human Resource Management (HRM). This text researches and applies principles of HRM. Chapter 3 discusses family leave, diversity, and multiculturalism in the workplace. These principles help shape our knowledge of human injustice and family leave in the workplace.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) signed by Clinton was to ensure working Americans more time to care for others without the fear of losing employment. The FMLA was a significant piece of legislation to enable Americans when it was signed. This article outlines how currently the FMLA is failing Americans. The FMLA is unpaid, it only applies to places with 50 or more workers, it excludes recent hires, and does not extend to elderly, sick, disabled, or extended family.

This is outlined through caregiving for a child, parent, spouse, and a person with disabilities. It pertains to current concerns in America and calls for the current administration to “reimagine” caregiving.

Franz Speilvogel owns the Laughing Planet Café which is a restaurant in Oregon and Nevada that has 14 locations and employs 280 people. After engaging with an employee about concerns and circumstances surrounding maternity leave, she decided to take action. Speilvogel decided that the costs of hiring and training outweighed the costs of paying for a 3 month parental leave. She made an executive decision that sometimes making human decisions can out math business decisions. This approach places the definition and circumstances of family leave in the hands of business owners.
